July 21-27, 2024

Turnstone Nature Education and Elevation Science Institute are teaming up to bring you a brand new Master Naturalist Certification experience.

The Beartooth Mountain foothills lie at the confluence of three of North America’s most magnificent ecosystems: the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Great Plains, and arid landscapes reminiscent of the Desert Southwest.  This makes the region not just phenomenally beautiful, but also a perfect natural classroom for students of nature who want to deepen their understanding of landscapes and the diverse plants and animals that inhabit them, both today and long ago.  A unique feature of this Master Naturalist program will be lessons on the region’s ancient life and landscapes, including visits to active dinosaur excavations led by an Elevation Science Institute paleontologist and geologist.

The focus of this week-long, intensive course will be developing skills to read and interpret the landscapes of the Beartooths and northern Bighorn Basin, both past and present. We will use biogeography, forest succession, and habitat to frame our knowledge of modern landscapes, and geology and deep time to interpret ancient ones. Through a combination of hiking, outdoor exploration, classroom instruction, and discussion, you will not only become a certified Montana Master Naturalist, but you will cultivate your curiosity in the wildlife and landscapes all around you and become a lifelong steward of Earth’s natural treasures.

Meet Your Team

Drew Lefebvre is the founder and director of Turnstone Nature Education. She grew up in the hemlock forests of Maine and attended college in Boston. In 2009 she moved to Montana for a season of wilderness trail work and has been here ever since, honing a passion for natural history education and for the ecology of Montana. She has led a variety of programs for adults and children, including citizen science, trail work, and natural history courses.

Drew holds an M.S. in Environmental Education from the University of Montana and is a certified Montana Master Naturalist and Master Gardener. She believes that everyone has a story within the natural world; helping them add meaning, knowledge, and a sense of wonder to their experiences is a highlight of her work.

Jason Schein is a paleontologist and founder of the Elevation Science Institute. Throughout his professional experience, he has developed a diverse slate of engaging educational programming in the fields of natural history, geology, and paleontology for audiences of all ages, specializing in creating unique, hands-on experiences to help people experience the power of science.

Jason is also a writer, certified Montana Master Naturalist, and outdoorsman. When he isn’t working, you can find Jason exploring his current city, Philadelphia, or hiking, hunting, fishing, and generally sharing his love of the natural world with his family.
